Amanda Brugel

Pointe Claire in Montreal's West Island is a tiny little town that is a bit sleepy. The West Island has a lot of communities. People who have never heard of it often think it is an island that is west-facing. Amanda Brugel was born there and her time was not long in the city. Brugel was raised in Courtice close to Oshawa Ontario. Her first ambition was to be an expert dancer. However, a growth spurt caused her to outgrow her dance partners she was able to have. According to an article in the Toronto Star, she revealed her height in heels as 6 feet 1 inch tall. Once I was bigger than any male partner and stopped dancing, I quit. Brugel was one of many former dancers who turned to acting. The teacher she had at high school encouraged her in the right direction. The teacher encouraged her to audition for a part in a school production. She auditioned and eventually got the lead in Anne of Green Gables. This led to her being awarded a Fine Arts Talent Scholarship from York University. In 2000 she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts at York University. Her career spans 20 years and she has been in over 60 productions including big screen productions and on smaller ones. Her most recognizable role was that of Rita (pictured beneath) in the television show The Handmaid's Tale. Brugel was the sole Canadian actor on the show in Season 1 and only appeared on occasion.
